Therapy Dogs International

Image of Tigger Therapy Dog with children.Therapy Dogs International or C.A.R.E. is a Board approved program in Cumberland County Schools. We have had as many as 20 schools participate in this program. Dogs must be approved via the national office for shots, training and the application process in general. At this time, this is the only national organization approved for this initiative. This is a wonderful program and all schools are eligible to participate.

Image of Tigger And Mrs. WoodRaleigh Road Elementary School’s Media Center has gone to the dogs!  Well, one specific dog and one afternoon each week, that is.  Every Monday, Tigger, the school’s Tail Waggin’ Tutor, visits the library with his owner Diane Wood. First-grade students come to the Media Center to read to him.  Tigger is a 10-year-old standard poodle that is registered with Therapy Dogs International, a group founded in 1976 that trains and evaluates dogs for placement in schools, hospitals, nursing homes, or wherever there is a need for dogs to provide companionship and unconditional love and acceptance. Tigger has been specifically trained for working with children and loves to listen to them read.  In the relaxed atmosphere of the library, students bring different books each week and practice reading while Tigger listens and receives lots of petting.   Students and faculty have learned that his favorite books are those that mention riding in cars!  Now that Tigger has been volunteering for a few weeks, he recognizes the children and his tail really wags!  When the stories are over, Tigger thanks the students by sitting up and shaking hands.  If you look at the school’s Reading Rodeo bulletin board, you’ll notice that Tigger already has a colt with his name in the corral.  That means over 100 books have been read to him so far.   Tigger and Mrs. Wood even came to the Barnes & Noble Book Fair where students came on to the stage in the Children’s Department to read to Tigger.  Thank you, Tigger and Mrs. Wood, for being part of the Raleigh Road Media Program.  Learn more about Therapy Dogs International and the Tail Waggin’ Tutor program at www.tdi-dog.org.
